Student Right To Know

Graduation rate data provide information on institutional productivity and help institutions comply with reporting requirements of the Student Right-to-Know Act (1990) and the Higher Education Act, amended (2008). Graduation rates data are collected for full-time, first-time degree and certificate-seeking undergraduate students. (Source: The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System(IPEDS)

Data collected include:

  • Number of students entering the institution as full-time, first-time degree or certificate-seeking students in a particular year (cohort), by race/ethnicity and gender;
  • Number of students completing their program within a time period equal to one and a half times (150%) the normal period of time, by race/ethnicity, gender, and Pell status; and
  • Number of students who transferred to other institutions.

As graduation is the main objective of the college experience, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has conducted research on student-athlete graduation rates for over 20 years. The Student Right-to-Know Act of 1990 obligates all universities and colleges to report graduation rates of their students, including those receiving athletic aid. In accordance with NCAA regulations, member schools are obligated to submit enrollment and graduation rates of both the student body and student-athletes receiving athletics aid to the NCAA annually. Subsequently, the NCAA releases reports on behalf of member schools to satisfy federal reporting requirements.
