Online Learning Self-Assessment

1.     Be sure you have access to a computer.  In general, our online courses are both PC and Mac compatible, and require no special software to run for the majority of classes.  There are some computers available throughout campus, but the availability of those computers may not meet your needs on a regular basis. You will need frequent access to an online capable computer to accomplish the course performance standards of online courses.  Some particular courses will have additional restrictions for software compatibility. The course syllabus for each individual course reflects those specific requirements.

2.     Have both reliable access to the Internet and an email address that will be maintained for the duration of the course. While not required, a high-speed connection (cable or DSL) is recommended.  E-mail accounts must be able to accommodate file attachments. Use of the SCF email account is required for all SCF Online courses.

3.     Have a back-up plan for technical emergencies. (Examples: hard drive crashes, loss of Internet connectivity, other computer malfunctions).

4.     Attend all required orientations and/or scheduled on-campus meetings. They are listed in the "notes" to the course on the online schedule.

5.     Access and become familiar with the course web site on to the first date of classes. While some classes allow you to access the class one or two days prior to class starting, most start on the evening before the first class start date. 

6.     Read all of the course syllabus.  If you have any questions, be sure to contact your instructor with any concerns or issues you may have as early as possible.

7.   Complete and submit all course work by the scheduled deadlines.

8.   Adhere to statements regarding student misconduct outlined in official State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota publications including the Catalog and the Student handbook.

9.   Regularly check course web site for updates and messages.

10.   Keep the college and instructor apprised of all changes (name, address, e-mail, etc.).

11.   Contact the SCF Disability Resource Center to determine any needed accommodations if you have a disability or need accommodations for your online class.
