Language and Literature

The  Language and Literature Department members are committed to providing our students with the language and writing skills needed to succeed in college and the workplace and with literary knowledge that will enhance their education and lives. We offer coursework in English, Literature, Creative Writing, Spanish, French, German, Italian and American Sign Language along with Public Speaking and Interpersonal Communication.

We are committed to offering courses via eLearning to provide flexibility and access for our students.  The flexibility of eLearning makes it a wise choice for students who work or have family obligations that make it difficult for them to attend classes during regularly scheduled hours.

Our Language and Literature faculty advise the following student organizations: The Literary Guild, The Italo Americano Club, Sigma Kappa Delta-English Honors, The Hispanic Latino Heritage Club, Brain Bowl and Conversation Salon.

English

The Language and Literature department runs ENC 1101, ENC 1102, and ENC 2210 every semester in many modalities and parts of term. ENC 1101 is freshman composition. ENC 1102 is the literature counterpart to Freshman Composition, Freshman Composition II, and ENC 2210  Technical Communication Course. We offer a Transfer Pathway for Professional and Technical Communication.

Students who want to improve their English to attend college in the United States or to become more professional in their English communication skills should take English for Academic Purposes (EAP). EAP is a college program for students who already know some English at an intermediate or advanced level. EAP is for students who live permanently in the United States. It is not a program for visitors.

Enroll in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program Fall semester classes begin in August. Spring classes begin in January in Venice and Bradenton, Florida.

Literature

The Language and Literature department offers LIT 2000- Introduction to Literature, a course that satisfies the state-wide Humanities requirement, intercultural/international requirement, and a writing intensive (otherwise referred to as Gordon Rule) requirement every semester in several instructional modalities and parts of term. We also offer a transfer pathway in Literature.

Creative Writing

The Language and Literature department runs offers CRW courses in a multitude of modalities and parts of term each semester. We offer a Transfer Pathway in Creative Writing and are completing a Creative Writing Certificate Program for our students.
