August 2014

FREE Self Defense classes – Tuesdays beginning August 26th, presented by Ancient Ways Martial Arts from 12:30pm to 1:30pm in the Gym (building 17) – worth 50 wellpoints for each class (maximum of 300 wellpoints for self-defense classes can be earned per semester).

FREE movies – “Wednesday Afternoon at the Movies,” every Wednesday at 2:00pm in Building 10-115, hosted by the SCF Film Club (features: 8/20 Amazing Spiderman 2; 8/27 Belle) – worth 25 wellpoints (maximum of 200 wellpoints can be earned per semester). **You must stay for the entire film to receive wellpoints.

FREE Yoga Flow classes – Fridays beginning August 29th from 12:00pm to 1:00pm in the SCF Gym-214 (building 17) – worth 50 wellpoints for each class (maximum of 300 wellpoints for yoga classes can be earned per semester).

Tuesday, August 26th & Wednesday, August 27th – Blood Drive from 10:00am to 3:00pm, Oneblood Blood Mobile will be in the “Loop” between the Family Heritage House (bldg. 8) and the Neel Performing Art Center (bldg. 11) – worth 50 wellpoints for a successful donation (extra wellpoints available for a double donation). You may also obtain wellpoints for any documented donation given off campus.

Thursday, August 28th – “Becoming Friends with Your Graphing Calculator, Algebra Edition,” presented by SCF Academic Resource Center staff from 1:00pm to 2:00pm in building 5-121. Are you confused about how to use the calculator in your Algebra class? Attend this workshop and learn how to make your graphing calculator work for you – worth 50 wellpoints.

Thursday, August 28th – HIV-STD-Hepatitis A, B, C Testing, presented by the Manatee County Health Department from 10:00am to 3:00pm on the service road located between the Student Union (bldg. 14) and the SCF Gym (bldg.17) – worth 25 wellpoints (maximum of 25 wellpoints can be earned per semester).

Thursday, August 28th – Thursday Afternoon Movie Special, “Snowpiercer,” at 2:00pm in Building 10-115, hosted by the SCF Film Club – worth 25 wellpoints (maximum of 200 wellpoints can be earned per semester). **You must stay for the entire film to receive wellpoints.

Wednesday, September 3rd – “The A-Game: Steps to Master Content Area Material,” presented by SCF Academic Resource Center staff from 1:00pm to 2:00pm in Building 5-121. Attend this workshop to learn the steps to take to master content area material and put you on the road to earning an A grade – worth 50 wellpoints.

Monday, September 8th – “Want to be a Health Science Major? Learn what it Takes,” presented by SCF Advising Services staff from 10:00am to 11:00am in Building 1-207. This workshop is designed to help interested students understand the requirements needed to apply to the Health Sciences program offerings at SCF. These programs include Dental Hygiene, Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Therapy Assistant, Radiography and the linkage program with St. Pete College in Respiratory Care. Some of the topics discussed will include: competitive admission, admission requirements, dates, deadlines, timetables, and opportunities for GPA improvement – worth 50 wellpoints.

Tuesday, September 9th – “Developing Your Decision Making Skills,” presented by SCF Advising Services staff from 9:30am to 10:30am in Building 1-207. Making decisions are at the center of every aspect in our lives, and every now and then there are critical instances when they can be difficult, confusing, and nerve-racking. Nevertheless, the decisions have to be made. Decision making is a way of integrating desirable and reliable ways of doing things, contributing to, organizing and managing our lives. If you need assistance with finding ways to make positive decisions you should attend this workshop – worth 50 wellpoints.

Wednesday, September 10th – “How to get the Arts in your Life,” presented by SCF Faculty from 2:00pm to 3:00pm in Building 11-189. Attend this workshop and learn how you can get the Arts in your life such as theater, music, museums and more – worth 50 wellpoints.

Thursday, September 18th - "Buddhism: A Conversation with Gen Demo" from 12:30pm to 1:30pm in Building 27-140. Join us as we explore and learn about Buddhism and its many practices and beliefs. Fen Kelsang Demo is an American Kadampa Buddhist nun and the resident teacher at Kadampa Meditation Center Florida in Sarasota. Demo has been studying and practicing Buddhism for many years under the guidance of her teacher, Venerable Geshe Kalsang Gyatso, who gave her the title Gen, indicating she is an ordained teacher in the Kadampa Tradition. Demo is admired as a Buddhist teacher and is known for her warmth and clear presentation of Buddha's teachings - worth 50 wellpoints.

Are you aware of the statistics on sexual violence? Come check your awareness and learn how to make others aware, learn to identify risk factors of sexual assault, how to support a victim, where to go for help and much more - worth 50 wellpoints.

***NEW EVENT***Wednesday, October 15th - Judaism: A Conversation with Rabbi Harold F. Caminker from 12:00pm to 1:30pm in Building 27-140. Please join students, faculty, staff members and members of the community to explore and learn about Judaism as it is practiced in the United States with Rabbi Caminker of Temple Beth El of Bradenton. Rabbi Caminker is the President of the Sarasota-Manatee Rabbinical Association and the author of "Faith Matters," a regular religion column in the Bradenton Herald. He has been a respected spiritual leader for over 40 years and active in interfaith communication work throughout his career, including leading the first Jewish/Christian/Muslim Passover Seder - worth 50 wellpoints.

Ever wonder what the effects of drinking and driving would feel like? Come test your ability to walk and drive while under the virtual influence of alcohol and discover why drinking and driving don’t mix – worth 25 wellpoints.

Friday, October  24th - Sunday, October 26th - West Side Story - the story of star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria as they struggle to rise above the hatred and intolerance that surrounds them. Soaring as the greatest love story of all time it remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. Bernstein's score is considered to be one of Broadway's finest and features such classics as Something's Coming, Tonight, America, I Feel Pretty and Somewhere. Performances begin at 8pm on the 24th and 25th and 2pm on the 26th in the Neel Performing Art Center (bldg. 11). General Admission is $12, students and SCF employees $6 - worth 50 wellpoints (must attach ticket stub to receive wellpoints).

Friday, October 31st - SCF Spooktacular Halloween Concert and Trick or Treat Event - concert begins at 6:30pm in the Neel Performing Arts Center (bldg. 11). It's tricks and treats with some ghostly musicians and spine tingling actors spreading a little Halloween cheer! Wear your favorite costume to the concert at 6:30pm followed by "trick or treat." Admission is one canned food item to be donated to the Food Bank of Manatee County - worth 50 wellpoints (must attach ticket stub to receive wellpoints).

Thursday, November 13th - Faculty Recital, Martha Lopez, Soprano. Concert begins at 8pm in the Neel Performing Arts Center (bldg. 11). Soprano Martha Lopez and pianist Lurray Myers will present an art song recital titled "Traveling through Song." Embark on a musical adventure with us as we travel through the ages to discover different cultures, countries and people through song. No passport required! General admission $8, Students and SCF Employees $4 - worth 50 wellpoints (must attach ticket stub to receive wellpoints).

Tuesday, November 18th – “Hire Me! Sending a Professional Message,” presented by SCF Career Resource Center staff from 4:00pm to 5:00pm in Building 1-207. Your in-person and online presence have the power to move you to the top of the hire list or sway an employer to remove your application completely. Attend this workshop and learn about presenting yourself professionally through social media and through in-person networking – worth 50 wellpoints.

Thursday, November 20th - Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra - Concert begins at 8pm in the Neel Performing Arts Center (bldg. 11). The SCF Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra present a music festival on Jewish themes to celebrate the rich musical heritage of our Jewish community. Music selections include Yiddish Dances, Kol Nidrei, Shalom!, the theme from Schindler's List, Symphony No.1: In Memoriam, Dresden, 1945; Israel: A symphonic Poem by Palmetto composer Dan Ritz. General admission $8, Students and SCF Employees $4 - worth 50 wellpoints (must attached ticket stub to receive wellpoints).

Monday, November 24th - Faculty Recital, Felicia Brunelle, Violin with Guest Artist Dr. Ann Knipschild, Organ. Concert begins at 8pm in the Neel Performing Arts Center. Please join organist Dr. Ann Knipschild, professor at Auburn University , and SCF faculty Dr. Felicia Brunelle in a performance of great music from baroque to contemporary for the violin and organ. Music by Vitali, Rheinberger, Gounod and others. General admission $8, Students and SCF Employees $4 - worth 50 wellpoints (must attach ticket stub to receive wellpoints).

December 2014

Tuesday, December 2nd - Holiday Concert "Winter Wonderland!" Concert begins at 8pm in the Neel Performing Arts Center (bldg. 11). Brrr... the SCF Choirs, Symphony Orchestra, and Guitar Ensemble take you on a journey to snow, ice and all things Winter. General admission $8, Students and SCF Employees $4 - worth 50 wellpoints (must attach ticket stub to receive wellpoints).

Thursday, December 4th - Jazz Bands in Concert. Concert begins at 8pm in the Neel Performing Arts Center (bldg. 11). Enjoy a variety of jazz styles from combo to big band including seasonal favorites.
