(02-11-2016) Best-selling Author Tim Dorsey to Visit SCF Venice
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota's (SCF) Language and Literature Department will host a discussion and book signing by New York Times best-selling author Tim Dorsey at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at SCF Venice, 8000 S. Tamiami Trail, Building 800, Selby Room.
Dorsey is a recent recipient of the John D. MacDonald Award for Excellence in Florida Fiction. He will discuss his writing experience and his works, including his most recent novel, "Coconut Cowboy."
(02-11-2016) SCF to Host Information Sessions on Educator Preparation Institute
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will host information sessions about its Educator Preparation Institute (EPI, formerly Alternative Certification Program). The program is for people who have at least bachelor's degrees in noneducation majors or teachers with temporary certificates who need professional certification.
After finishing all courses in the program and passing required state and college exams, participants will be eligible for the Florida Department of Education's professional teaching certificate. Evening and weekend scheduling of classes allows working professionals to participate. The cost for the program is $2,248.08.

"Hide and Seek" is a thriller by Lezley Havard centering around new owners of a country home who get more than they bargained for when the pregnant wife is the only one able to see a locally infamous child playing around the house.
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Theatre Department will present "Hide and Seek" Feb. 19-28 at the Howard Studio Theatre at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W. Show times are 8 p.m. Feb. 19, 20, 26 and 27, and 2 p.m. Feb. 21 and 28. Tickets are $12, $6 for SCF staff and all Florida students.

The district competition prepared and qualified the members for the upcoming 67th Annual Florida Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) State Leadership Conference and Competition in Orlando, March 17-20.
State College of Florida business students in Phi Beta Lambda-Gamma Beta Upsilon excelled at the Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) district leadership conference at South Florida State College (SFSC) Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016 in Avon Park.
(02-09-2016) College Goal Sunday Set for Feb. 28
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will host the only College Goal Sunday event in Manatee County from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Feb. 28 at SCF Bradenton
College Goal Sunday is a state-based volunteer program that helps college-bound students and their families obtain financial aid for college by completing the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA.) Financial aid counselors will assist with the application process.

"The Guitar Fest should pique interest among anyone wondering what it sounds like to hear fifty guitars playing as an orchestra," said Music Professor Rex Willis.
State College of Florida Music Department will present Guitar Fest, a concert performance by the SCF Guitar Ensemble conducted by SCF Music Professor Rex Willis, at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 1 in Neel Performing Arts Center at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W. Guitar Fest also will feature guitar ensembles from Riverview High School, Manatee School for the Arts (MSA) and the Harrison School for the Arts in Lakeland.
(02-09-2016) Workforce Solutions to Offer Private Investigator Course
This course provides the basic information on becoming a licensed private investigator. Information includes regulation of the industry, department rules, licensing criteria and techniques of investigation.
State College of Florida Workforce Solutions will offer a Private Investigator course beginning Feb. 26 at SCF Venice, 8000 S. Tamiami Trail, Building 800, Room 832.
(02-08-2016) SCF Venice to Feature Talk on Islam
"There are a lot of misconceptions about Islam, thus creating fear, hatred and confusion on what Islam really is. The goal of the talk is to give a clear idea of what Islam and Muslims really are," said Dr. Woody McCree, associate professor of Art, Design and Humanities.
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota's (SCF) Philosophy Club hosts Hassan Sultan, whose topic will be "Truth about Islam," at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at SCF Venice, 8000 S. Tamiami Trail, Building 800, Selby Room. The event is free and open to the public.
(02-04-2016) SCF Receives Grant to Create Nursing Scholarship
The State College of Florida (SCF) Foundation was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Venice Hospital Auxiliary Volunteers to create the SCF South Sarasota County Outstanding Nursing Scholarship.
"This scholarship is to award outstanding achievement to one nursing student and will be based upon high academic accomplishments and SCF Nursing Faculty recommendations," said SCF Foundation Executive Director Cassandra Holmes.

"The Creation," which celebrates this planet that is our home, will be accompanied by nature photographs provided by the Science and Environmental Council of Southwest Florida.
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Concert Choir along with the Gloria Musicae Singers and Sarasota Orchestra under the direction of Joseph Holt, conductor, will perform Franz Joseph Haydn's "The Creation" at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, at Church of the Palms, 3224 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota.
