SCF, Manatee-Sarasota Offers Online SAT/ACT Preparation Classes
Students who need to prepare for the SAT and ACT tests can take preparation classes online through State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota.
The classes consist of two parts; cost is $100 for one part, or $174 for both. Interested students can register and view the syllabus at www.ed2go.com/SCF. Start dates for upcoming classes are Nov. 9, Dec. 14 and Jan. 18.
SCF, Manatee-Sarasota Partners with MTC on Spring Course Offering
SCF is offering Written Communications 1 (ENC1101) 5:30-6:50 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Jan. 9 at the MTC main campus, 6305 State Road 70 E.
The communications course is required for completion of an associate's degree and encompasses grammar and diction review, composition, expository writing and research instruction.
Author Charles Sobczak to Speak About Irrational Fear at SCF Venice
Charles Sobczak, a local novelist, will discuss our irrational fears of alligators and how we can overcome them in keeping with the Green Team's theme 12:30-2 p.m. Oct. 27 in Selby Room 800 at SCF Venice, 8000 S. Tamiami Trail.
Sobczak lives on Sanibel Island and has written about Florida's scariest topics. Sobczak's book "Alligators, Sharks and Panthers: Deadly Encounters with Florida's Top Predator - Man," won a silver medal in 2008 from the Florida Publishers and Authors Association for both Best Adult Nonfiction and Best Young Adult Nonfiction.
SCF, Manatee-Sarasota Hosting Job Fair to Hire Adjunct Instructors
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will have an Adjunct Job Fair 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, at SCF Lakewood Ranch, 7131 Professional Parkway E., in the Medical Technology Simulation Center lobby.
Applicants must have a master's degree with 18 graduate hours in the discipline, and are asked to bring a resumé and transcripts to the job fair. Computers will be available to complete the required online application. Interested applicants can also apply online at employment.SCF.edu.
Dr. Richard Barnhouse Named VP for Strategic Enrollment Management
Dr. Richard Barnhouse, the new Vice President for Strategic Enrollment Management at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF), is geared up for Spring enrollment, which begins Oct. 24, and wants to make sure students know SCF staff are available to help them explore their options.
Dr. Barnhouse, who took over his new role in July, is focused on providing a concierge experience for students and having more SCF liaisons in the community.
SCF, Manatee-Sarasota to Participate in Sarasota GradNation Summit
Nicole Stablein, coordinator for recruitment and orientation at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) is scheduled to appear on a panel at Sarasota GradNation set for 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at Suncoast Technical College, 4748 S. Beneva Road, Sarasota.
GradNation's mission is to increase high school graduation rates and ultimately prepare young people for success in college and careers. The Education Foundation of Sarasota County has partnered with America's Promise Alliance, AT&T and Suncoast Technical College to host GradNation which will offer panel discussions and breakout sessions with community and industry leaders to help students understand their opportunities for college and beyond.
SCF, Manatee-Sarasota Adds Gator Engineering Info Session
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will host an additional information session in North Port for students interested in the University of Florida Gator Engineering at SCF program. Applications are due by Nov. 1 for the Fall 2017 semester. The information session will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26 at the Morgan Family Community Center, 6207 W. Price Blvd., North Port. It is open to the public.
The information session will be presented by representatives from SCF and UF. It will include an opportunity to check out plans for the Gator Den, a dedicated resource space for engineering students.

State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) District Board of Trustees held its regular monthly meeting Oct. 18 at SCF Lakewood Ranch.
The board received presentations on: • The Operational budget. • Student athletics, including scholar athletes and community service projects by the athletes. The Board approved: • Non-financial and financial consent agenda items.
SCF, Manatee-Sarasota Pop Culture Club to Host Haunted House in Venice
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Venice Pop Culture Club will host its ninth annual Haunted House, 7-10 p.m. Oct. 24 to 27 and 7-11 p.m. Oct. 28, at the Lakeside Pavilion at SCF Venice, 8000 S. Tamiami Trail
"The Game House" will offer a scary twist on childhood games to anyone who dares to check in. Parents should be aware that even though there is not an age requirement for the haunted house, it may not be appropriate for younger children.
SCF, Manatee-Sarasota Nursing Students to Participate in Disaster Drill
More than two dozen nursing students and several faculty members at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will participate in a disaster planning drill at Doctors Hospital of Sarasota on Nov. 4.
The nursing students will participate as victims in a disaster scenario and will learn about emergency medical care as they take part in the drill. The nursing students will have to take on dual roles as actors as they role play to help make the disaster planning drill more realistic. They will be involved in scenarios that will include gunshot and chemical agent victims.
