(Bradenton, Fla., June 3, 2009)  - Graduating seniors from area high schools and other students in Manatee Community College's (MCC) College Reach-Out Program (CROP) were honored May 19 at the 11th Annual CROP Awards Ceremony held at MCC Bradenton.

CROP, a statewide program funded through a grant from the Florida Department of Education, is designed to increase the number of students who successfully complete postsecondary education.  MCC's school-based CROP program assists targeted students by providing motivational and educational activities to keep them on a college-bound track.

Students honored as "CROP Student of the Year" for their school included Natalia Purvis (Booker Middle School); Kiara Robinson (Bayshore High School); Gilberto Parada (Booker High School); Rubi Rodriquez (Central High School); Brianna Simms (Manatee High School); Jalissa Rasbin (Palmetto High School); Shavondra Singleton (Riverview High School); and Ludger Denis (Southeast High School).

Forty-eight percent of this year's CROP seniors (29 of 60) will start college this month through the 2009 Summer Bridge Program at MCC. Students earned program scholarships for approximately $800. CROP graduates who attend MCC also are eligible to receive tuition and book scholarships.
