Honors Students Recognized

(Bradenton, Fla., May 4, 2009) - Members of the Manatee Community College (MCC) Spring 2009 graduating class and other students who excelled scholastically or through service to their college and community were recognized in Honors Convocation ceremonies held Friday, May 1, at MCC Bradenton and MCC Venice. Collegewide, award winners received $69,250 in scholarships or cash awards.

At MCC Bradenton, recipients of Beverly Beall and R. Kemp Riechmann Foundation scholarships were Israel Benavides, Hilary English, Leslie Henry, Yolanda Ibasfalean, Irina Kharitonenko, Hong Mei Lin, Damon Martin, Richard Martin, Diana Ochoa, Maxwell Sandager, Ashley Thomas and Dat Vu. MCC Venice Students included Lisa Thomas, Lindsay Chenowith, Carmino Spina, and Aracely Gonzalez.

Sixteen students received Raymond D. and Janet L. Cheydleur Educational Endowment Scholarship awards. Students receiving awards included Noemi Aleman, Amanda Amole, Jazmin Camacho, Melissa Comes, Hilary English, Margaret Fagan, Justin Hall, Irina Kharitonenko, Holly Kilvitis, Brandon May, Nicholas McKee, Courtney Paugh, Cali-Sue Taylor, Spencer Tiedeman, Melanie Torres and Margaret Weiland.  Hilary English also received a medallion and certificate for being a Phi Theta Kappa Guistwhite Scholar.

MCC Bradenton students who won MCC Image awards in recognition of their ability to overcome barriers to their success in college were Jazmin Camacho, Justo Martinez, Stephen Ray, Whitney Reshard and Thavey Rideout Phoolsuwan. Image Award winners at MCC Venice were Noelle Arena, Dianne Gagliano-Mindel and Steven Harrison.

 

Other Awards

 

Winners of $400 Wayne Gulbrandsen Academic Scholarship for Single Parents awards were John Carpenter, Hans Duque Abella, Amber Haggerty, Monique Pollock and Whitney Reshard. Jami Worley won a $3,500 Sarasota-Manatee Phi Beta Kappa Association Scholarship.

MCC Bradenton student Laurie Gehrt received a $300 award for the Annual Art Exhibition Best in Show. She also won an $175 award for first-place in the drawing/painting category. The following students also placed first in student art exhibition in the following categories: Christopher Purcell, graphics and graphic design; Amber Gibson, photography; Irving Kirsch, pottery; Agneta Wettergren, sculpture.

Other art exhibition winners at MCC Bradenton included Tamas Frescka, who won the $225 MCC President's Award and Kevin Small who received $225 as the winner of the Juror's Choice Award.

At MCC Venice, outstanding students in art who received first place in the following categories were Danielle Ritchie, drawing and painting; Christopher Blond, photography, graphic design and two-dimensional design; Evan LaMar, pottery and sculpture. Merit Award winners for art were Rhianna Donnelly, Loretta Ehlers, Timothy Poisson. 

Winners of the Pat Kuebler Scholarship Award were MCC Venice student Vanessa Tores and MCC Bradenton student Annie Hendriex.
