MCC Wins Innovation Award
(Bradenton, Fla., March 23, 2009) - Manatee Community College (MCC) has received the 2009 Innovation of the Year Award from the League for Innovation in the Community College for MCC's summer high school program, "Revealing the Truth: Multidisciplinary Explorations into Crime Scene Investigations."
"Revealing the Truth" is a program offered the past four summers for high-achieving high school students in Manatee and Sarasota counties through grants from the Florida Department of Education's Governor's Summer Program. The free four-week program has provided hands-on training in state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques, and analysis and comparison of DNA results. Students learn social and natural sciences, information technology, mathematics and 21st century workplace skills to reach investigative conclusions. Tentative plans for a similar program this summer are in place.
MCC faculty and staff involved in this program include Jane Pfeilsticker, Dr. Andy Swanson, Dr. David Friedenbach, Cindy Hunter, Daisy Vulovich, Dr. Mike Mears, Brad Davis and Dory Lock.
The League for Innovation in the Community College is an international organization dedicated to supporting community colleges. Every year the League honors capstone achievements in innovation and experimentation through its Innovation of the Year Award.
