Math Professor Publishes Book
Dr. Joni Pirnot, associate professor in the Manatee Community College (MCC) mathematics department, had a book published in July by VDM, Verlag, Saarbrücken, Germany. Published in English, the book, "Two-dimensional Automata: Shift Spaces and Recognizable Languages," is now available on Amazon.com.
In her book, Pirnot describes the first working model for two-dimensional automata that could "revolutionalize technology" by increasing computing power. It is described as a clear exposition that makes the subject matter accessible to undergraduate students while including groundbreaking theorems for serious mathematicians or computer scientists.
Pirnot also has published works in national and international academic journals, and given presentations at MCC, the University of South Florida (USF), a European Science Foundation Workshop in Salerno, Italy, and the 12th International Conference on Implementation and Application of Automata in Prague, Czech Republic. She received a teaching excellence award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development in 2007 and was recognized in Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 2005.
A past advisor to an award-winning MCC chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honors society, Pirnot has a Ph.D. in pure mathematics from USF, where she also earned a master's degree in mathematics.
