MCC Athletes Score Academic & Athletic Awards

(Bradenton, Fla., Nov. 13, 2007) -  Kayla Appleby, a member of Manatee Community College's (MCC) 2007 Suncoast Conference Champion softball team, was named to the 2006-07 National Junior College Activities Association (NJCAA) Distinguished Academic All American team with a 3.90 grade point average (GPA). She  went on to attend Australian University with a scholarship .

Appleby and MCC volleyball player Grace Swan also were named to the NJCAA Academic All American team (requiring 3.6 GPA or better). Fifteen MCC athletes are on the Florida Community Colleges Activities Association (FCCAA) Academic All State team (3.3 GPA or better). Twenty-four earned Suncoast Academic All Conference honors (minimum 3.0 GPA).

MCC's softball team ended the season ranked second in the nation. The baseball team was Suncoast Conference co-champion. Other MCC students earning athletic honors included:

  • Catherine McDaniel, Suncoast Conference Pitcher of the Year, softball;
  • Scott Rembisz, Suncoast Conference Player of the Year, baseball;  
  • Tiffinee Harvey, Suncoast Conference Player of the Year and FCCAA All Conference Player of the Year, softball;
  • Bennett Davis, Suncoast Conference Player of the Year, baseball; and
  • Michelle Hendrickson, FCCAA and NJCAA Region VIII All Tournament teams, softball.
