MCC President Named Among Most Powerful
Manatee Community College (MCC) President Dr. Sarah Pappas was named among the 100 Most Powerful People in Sarasota Today by Sarasota Magazine in its Summer 2007 edition.
Compiling the list took several months of research and discussions with community leaders, according to the editors. The article stated that the key element for what makes someone powerful in the results-oriented community is: "They get things done."
Calling Pappas a steady and serious college president who serves on "powerhouse" state and local boards, editors said "she's elevated the profile and quality of our largest institution of higher education, adding new programs, increasing enrollment while lowering class size, and investing $29 million in facilities."
In her 11th year as MCC's president, Pappas has served as president of the Florida Community College Activities Association and on the Florida Humanities Council Board of Directors. She's also held positions on boards that include the Sarasota Economic Development Corporation, Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, Florida High Tech Corridor Council, Manatee County Economic Development Council, Suncoast Workforce Development, Sarasota County Openly Plans for Excellence, Florida Women's Alliance, United Way, Bradenton Kiwanis Club and The Civic League of Sarasota.
Other honors include a University of South Florida President's Distinguished Citizen Award, People of Vision Award form Prevent Blindness of Florida, Women of Excellence Award from Manatee Memorial Hospital Foundation; and being named a Woman of Light by the Women's International Conference and among Who's Who in Tampa Bay Business by the Tampa Bay Business Journal.
