Coca-Cola Foundation Awards MCC Student $1,000 Scholarship
(Bradenton, Fla., July 23, 2007) -- Manatee Community College (MCC) sophomore Sean Abene has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. Abene, 23, is a Bradenton resident and a graduate of Bayshore High School.
The Foundation awards a total of 400 scholarships annually to students attending higher-education institutions granting two-year degrees. Academic success and community service are key criteria for winning the scholarships.
Abene has attended MCC classes since 2004. A member of the Air Force National Guard, he has had to interrupt his studies when called to active duty overseas, during Operation Iraqi Freedom and due to hurricanes. He is a member of MCC's Circle K community service club, which collaborates with the local Kiwanis club, and was recently elected president of the MCC Bradenton chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa international honor society.
"This scholarship program gives support and encouragement to an under-served population of college students," said J. Mark Davis, president of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. "These fine students continue to give back to their communities through volunteer service."
Abene expects to earn his associate in arts degree in December of this year and transfer to the University of South Florida, where he will major in information technology.
