MCC Holds College Reach-Out Program Awards Ceremony

(Bradenton, Fla., May 16, 2007) - Graduating seniors from area high schools and other students in Manatee Community College's (MCC) College Reach-Out Program (CROP) were honored May 10 at the Ninth Annual CROP Awards Ceremony at MCC Bradenton. Dr. Sarah H. Pappas, president, gave welcoming remarks and students were presented with certificates, gift bags, scholarships and special achievement awards.

CROP is a statewide program funded through a grant from the Florida Department of Education and designed to increase the number of students who successfully complete postsecondary education. School-based site coordinators assist targeted students by providing motivational and educational activities to keep them on a college-bound track.

MCC CROP students named Students of the Year included Robert Koontz (Booker Middle School); Jhojam Torres (Sugg Middle School); Jalla Johnson (Bayshore High School); Deeandrea Burgos (Booker High School); Nicole Iglesias (Manatee High School); Daniel Torquemada Jr. (Palmetto High School); Shaquita Singleton (Riverview High School); and Meles Anneaud (Southeast High School).

Eighty-three percent of 47 high school seniors who participated in CROP last year went on to college. Twenty of those received Summer Bridge Program scholarships worth more than $600 each to attend MCC the summer after high school graduation. CROP graduates who attend MCC are eligible for tuition and book scholarships. Kristen Anderson is the MCC program's director. Other participants in the ceremony were Dr. Donald Bowman, vice president of student development and enrollment services; Sheila McCants, MCC counselor; Gary Russell, Summer Bridge Program coordinator; and Edmundo Delgado, CROP multicultural specialist.
