MCC Presents Musical, In Ybor City
(Bradenton, Fla., Nov. 8, 2006) - The Manatee Community College (MCC) Music Program will present In Ybor City, an original musical written and staged by three MCC faculty and staff members, at 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19 and 20, 2007, and 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 21, in Neel Performing Arts Center, located off 26th Street at 60th Avenue West, MCC Bradenton.
The musical explores the lives of three Cuban, Spanish and Italian families whose lives intertwine in "the cigar capital of the world" in 1929, before the Great Depression changed their lives forever. The historic city's occupants shared a love of tobacco, music and dance, and made the cigar factories and their social clubs the focal points of their lives.
Melodie Dickerson, a Tampa native and coordinator of choral and vocal studies at MCC, will direct the production. Rex Willis, a performer and published composer who teaches guitar and composition, wrote the music. Veteran actor, director and playwright James Thaggard, who manages the Neel Performing Arts Center box office, wrote the musical's book and collaborated with Willis on the lyrics. More than 40 MCC students are involved in creating on-stage roles and performing in the Latin-style orchestra.
General admission is $12. Tickets for MCC staff and Florida students are $6 and will be available at the Neel Performing Arts Center box office after Jan. 8, 2007. For more information, call (941) 752-5252.
