MCC Student Named FCPA Student of the Year

(Bradenton, Fla., July 26, 2006) - Manatee Community College (MCC) student Christina Kaliher was named the 2006 Two-Year College/Technical Center Experiential Student of the Year by the Florida Career Professionals Association (FCPA). She received a recognition plaque and a $300 scholarship.

Kaliher served as the MCC Venice bureau chief for the student newspaper, Veritas, and is an intern at the North Port Sun daily newspaper. At the latter newspaper, she published more than 20 articles, including a front-page story about a renovation project at MCC Venice. She also helped design the Sun's "Random Page" for local teens.

An internship was one of the requirements for winning the FCPA award and scholarship. Kaliher was nominated for the award by Wanda Kenney, MCC Venice Career Resource Center advisor. She received letters of recommendation from Veritas advisor Therese Hounsell and North Port Sun editor Elaine Allen-Emrich.

A member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, Kaliher is on the National Dean's List and a recipient of a Bright Futures Merit Scholarship. She is pursuing an associate in arts degree at MCC and plans to attend the University of Florida this fall and major in journalism.
