MCC Softball Team 5th in the Nation

The Lady Lancers softball team made College history by finishing the season fifth in the nation. As Gulf District champions, the team became the first in MCC's history to play in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Tournament in Clermont.

In the 16-team national playoffs, the Lancers won 8-0 and 2-1 victories on Thursday, May 19. Losses on Friday, 5-0 against Indian River Community College and 7-1 against Wabash Valley, Illinois, ended the season with the team tied for fifth place with Temple College, Texas.  With a 52-16 season record, the MCC team also set a record for the number of wins.

At the earlier Gulf District Tournament, the team beat No. 1 and 2 ranked teams to capture a berth in the national tournament. Coach Jeff Roberts was named Gulf District Coach of the Year.  Players named to the Suncoast Conference first team are Marisa Chase, Turtle Phillips and Chelsey Edwards. Allyson Cummings was named to the second team.  Shelley Bartlett won an honorable mention. Cummings, Phillips, Nikki Henderson, Lauren Daykin and Debora Moretto were named to district and FCCAA All-Tournament teams. Sophomore Ashley Matthews received a scholarship to continue her softball career at Nova Southeastern University in Davie.
