MCC Names Bellamy Head Basketball Coach
(Bradenton, Fla., May 17, 2005) - Manatee Community College (MCC) has named former Lancer and Palmetto resident Reggie Bellamy as head basketball coach.
Bellamy has been head basketball coach at Manatee High School for the past five seasons. He played forward for the Lancers in 1993-95 and was team captain during the 1994-95 season. Bellamy continued his collegiate career at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, where he received a bachelor's degree.
MCC Vice President of Student Development and Enrollment Services Dr. Donald R. Bowman and Athletic Director George Sanders said the choice of Bellamy reflects the college's commitment to the basketball team's success.
"Reggie Bellamy is a proven coach who brings a great deal of experience in talent evaluation and skill development to our program. He will emphasize the fundamentals on the court and in the classroom," said Bowman.
Bellamy recently accepted a full-time position at MCC as a student development advisor, which will allow him to be more accessible during the day to student-athletes and to monitor their academic progress firsthand. The basketball coaching position is a part-time, stipend position, as are all MCC head coaching positions.
"This opportunity will give me the chance to influence players from an academic standpoint, which is one of my goals at MCC," said Bellamy. "We also intend to compete at the conference and state levels as a basketball team."
Bellamy will start recruiting immediately for the 2005-06 season. "We hope to keep the student-athletes who already have signed, but we do have some slots that need to be filled. We're counting on Coach Bellamy to complete a competitive roster," said Sanders.
