Spring Graduation Exercises Held May 13
(Bradenton, Fla., May 14, 2005) - Manatee Community College (MCC) Spring 2005 graduation exercises were held at 7 p.m., Friday, May 13, at the Manatee Convention and Civic Center, Palmetto. Approximately 241, out of a total of 533 graduating students, participated in the ceremony.
MCC President Dr. Sarah Pappas offered opening remarks and conferred degrees. Guest speaker Diane McFarlin is publisher of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune newspaper, the largest newspaper in the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group. A fourth-generation Floridian, she has served as managing and executive editor of the newspaper and director of broadcast for the 24-hour cable news channel SNN-6. She is a past president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors. Student speaker and graduating sophomore Matthew Fournier, a 20-year-old honors student, served as a Student Ambassador and tutor to fellow students. He will pursue a degree in microbiology at the University of Florida and then a degree in dentistry.
Other program participants included Rip duPont III, chair, District Board of Trustees; Dr. John Rosen, vice president, academic affairs; Stephanie Cook, assistant professor, computing and engineering technology; Joni Pirnot, instructor, mathematics; Robert Donovan, professor and mace bearer; Carol Hawkinson, organist; MCC Bradenton Student Government Association (SGA) president Michael Monaghan; SGA Venice president Christopher Kuwik; Rev. Don Nicholson, chaplain, Campus Ministries; and music students Cole Dodds, Elise Moore, Kevin Rose and Megan Wintersteen.
