Herald-Tribune Publisher to Speak at MCC Graduation
(Bradenton, Fla., May 6, 2005) - Diane McFarlin, publisher of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune newspaper, is the guest speaker at the Manatee Community College (MCC) 2005 Spring graduation exercises that will begin at 7 p.m., Friday, May 13, at the Manatee Convention Center in Palmetto.
A fourth-generation Floridian, McFarlin was named publisher of the Herald-Tribune in November 1999. She previously served as managing and executive editor. She also was executive editor of The Gainesville Sun for three years.
McFarlin serves on United Way, Community Foundation and Chamber of Commerce boards and founded the Season of Sharing, an annual fund-raising drive geared toward preventing children from becoming homeless. Past president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors, McFarlin won the American Jewish Committee's Civic Achievement Award in 2002.
The Herald-Tribune is the largest newspaper in the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group. McFarlin was named director of broadcast when it became one of the first multimedia newsrooms in the country in 1995 with the launching of the 24-hour cable news channel SNN-6. The channel reaches 185,000 households in Sarasota, Charlotte and Manatee counties.
