Area Education Professionals Participate in Career Forum

(Venice, Fla., Nov. 15, 2004) -  A panel of 11 education professionals met with more than 40 Manatee Community College (MCC) students in the Second Annual Education Career Forum held Nov. 3 at MCC Venice. It was coordinated by MCC Career Resource Centers and the Early Childhood Education Program.

Panel members included Dr. Pat Williams, human resources, Sarasota County Schools; Dan Parrett, director, secondary education, Charlotte County Schools; Darlene Wedler-Johnson, dean, arts and letters and social and behavioral sciences, MCC; Carolyn Huber, early childhood education, and Dr. Felix Rizk, natural science, professors, MCC; Susan Freeman, director, student services, University of South Florida Sarasota/Manatee; Mary Wolf, program manager, School Readiness Coalition; Claudia Malecki, Gold Seal CDA instructor, Sarasota Family YMCA; Sue Owens, exceptional education teacher, Glenn Allen Elementary School; John Holcomb, director, Triad Schools; and Joan McGill, CEO, MCC Venice.

Participants learned about employment opportunities, educational requirements, higher and continuing education, financial aid, the impact of universal pre-Kindergarten legislation, volunteer opportunities and critical needs in mathematics and science. Former and current MCC students Susan Freeman and Wanda Prestipino shared insights about setting and achieving career goals.
