Passwords

Passwords are an important aspect of computer security. They are the front line of protection for user accounts. All State College of Florida employees (including contractors and vendors with access to State College of Florida systems) are responsible for taking the appropriate steps, as outlined below, to select and secure their passwords. SCF will follow the security “best practice” guideline for creation of passwords, the protection of those passwords, and the frequency of change.

Password Criteria:

All passwords (e.g., email, web, desktop computer, Banner, etc.) must be changed at least every 90 days.

  • A history of 6 passwords will be remembered. This means that 6 consecutive passwords will be retained and unavailable for reuse.
  • All new passwords created must be at least eight characters long
  • New passwords may not exceed 48 characters in length
  • Passwords less than 15 characters in length:
    • Must contain at least three of the following four elements:
      • Uppercase letters
      • Lowercase letters
      • Numbers
      • Contain at least one of the following special characters + -  ? . % { } International characters are not allowed
    • Do NOT use the following special characters @ $ & / \ = # ; ~
    • Do not use embedded spaces
    • Your password cannot begin with a special character
      • Passwords at least 15 characters long must pass limited checking for commonly used phrases or patterns
