State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) and the Manatee County and Sarasota County school districts have received a grant from the National Science Foundation to pilot a project that will increase the number of students entering science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields by:

  • Encouraging high school students to consider careers in science or in teaching science.
  • Improving the overall quality of science education in local high schools so that students will perform better in their college science courses.

The BASBE project will:

  • Expose high school teachers to methods for incorporating science career exploration into their biology curriculum, especially technician careers utilizing molecular techniques.
  • Expose high school students to biotechnology career awareness including exposure to the tools and techniques of applied biotechnology.
  • Encourage parents, mentors, and counselors to discuss career planning with students with a particular emphasis on careers in biology and biotechnology.
  • Promote communication and collaboration between school districts and SCF. These Web pages include a discussion forum for teachers who are participating in the project.
  • Introduce students to biotechnology through the use of laboratory equipment and inquiry-based learning activities.
  • Conduct career exploration programs at participating schools and other community venues.
