Faculty Recital, Carol Sparrow, Mezzo-Soprano and Randolph Locke, Tenor

January 10, 2103                    8 p.m.                         Neel Performing Arts Center

SCFmusic faculty members, Carol Sparrow, Mezzo-soprano and Randolph Locke, Tenor will perform a voice recital accompanied on the piano by Lurray Myers. They will perform two famous song cycles from the Romantic period. Ms. Sparrow will sing Hector Berlioz's "Les nuits d été” and Mr. Locke, Robert Schumann’s “Dichertliebe.” The husband-and-wife team of Carol Sparrow and Randolph Locke has performed with major international opera houses and orchestras. Locke and Sparrow are the co-founders of the nonprofit organization Opera for Animals: Singing is Saving (OASIS) started in 2001 to raise funds for animal welfare groups.

SCF Student Showcase  

January 17, 2013           8 p.m.                         Neel Performing Arts Center

SCF music students solo competition winners will perform a variety of musical works in a benefit concert. All proceeds of this concert will be used to help defray the costs of SCF music students attending conferences and other special events.

Guest Artist, Hein Jung, Soprano

January 29, 2013                   8 p.m.                         Neel Performing Arts Center

Hein Jung, Assistant Professor of Music at Unversity of Tampa holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Hein Jung, soprano will present an evening of art song and opera featuring Tre Sonnetti di Petrarca by Franz Liszt and Großmächtige Prinzessinfrom Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss. Jung specializes in opera, oratorio and recital. She has performed throughout the United States as well as internationally and has performed with the Madison Opera, the Bel Canto chorus, the Rancine-Kenosha Symphony, and the Milwaukee Symphony. Jung has also been a soloist in oratorios such as Mozart's "C" Minor Mass" and Poulenc's "Gloria."

Guest Artist, Trio Voilà

February 5, 2013                    8 p.m.                         Neel Performing Arts

Trio Voilà is a mixed ensemble comprised of flute, viola and guitar. Offering a unique musical experience, this combination of instruments has a long tradition with original music from the 19th and 20th centuries, along with new, groundbreaking and exciting music by contemporary composers. By nature, the tone creation of a wind, bowed and plucked instrument is very different, producing sound colors that cannot be created by traditional wind or string ensembles. Trio Voilà consists of SCF music faculty members Thomas Koch, guitar and Jane Hoffman, flute with Laura Jensen-Jennings, voila.

Faith Prince, Master Class

February 18, 2013                    8 p.m.                         Neel Performing Arts Center

Faith Prince will teach a Master Class to SCF music students. She is best known for her Tony-winning turn as Miss Adelaide in the 1992 Broadway revival of "Guys and Dolls" and was nominated for two Tonys for her portrayal of Ella Peterson in the revival of "Bells Are Ringing" and "Jerome Robbins' Broadway " (Drama Desk nomination). Prince spent five seasons in TV's "Spin City" and the acclaimed "Now and Again" and currently can be seen in Showtime's original series "Huff." Prince is an accomplished singer and graduate of Cincinati Conservatory of Music who has appeared with the Boston Pops, Utah Symphony and Cincinnati Pops. Presented in cooperation with Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota.

Symphonic Wind Ensemble Concert

February 19, 2013                   8 p.m.                         Neel Performing Arts Center
 
SCF Wind Ensemble will present "Dances from Around the World." The program will consist of Brahms' "Hungarian Dances," Dvorak's "Slovonic Dances," Beethoven "Two German Dances," an arrangement of the "Milli Attan: National Dance of Afghnaistan," the Mexican dance "La Bamba De Vera Cruz," "Three Japanese Dances" by Bernard Rogers, and Alfred Reed's " Armenian Dances No. 1." "San Antonio Dances" by Frank Ticheli, and will feature clarinet soloist Laura Stephenson performing "African Dances" by Kit Turnbull.

Rene Izquierdo, Master Class

February 21, 2013              8 p.m.

Rene Izquierdo, guitar will teach a master class to SCF music students. Izquierdo, a native of Cuba, graduated from the Guillermo Tomas, Amadeo Roldan Conservatory and Superior Institute of Art in Havana. In the United States, Izquierdo earned a Master of Music and an Artist Diploma degree from the Yale University School of Music. He has appeared as a guest soloist and in chamber music concerts throughout the U.S., Cuba and Europe. A recipient of numerous awards, he currently is a professor of classical guitar at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Presented in cooperation with the Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota.

Symphony Orchestra Concert

February 28, 2013                   8 p.m.                         Neel Performing Arts Center
 
SCF Symphony Orchestra presents "Viva la France!" highlighting music of French composers. Selections will include "Ballet Music from Faust" by Gounod, "Orpheus in the Underworld" by Offenbach, Ravel's "Pavane for a Dead Princess," "Concertino" by Chaminade featuring flute soloist Dr. Jane Hoffman, Debussy's "Clair de lune," Berlioz's "March to the Scaffold" from Symphonie Fantastiqe, and "Selections from Carmen" by Bizet.

Choirs in Concert

March 5, 2013                         8 p.m.                         Neel Performing Arts Center

SCF Chamber and Concert Choirs will present "Seriously Funny" featuring classical music with a humorous twist. A variety of musical styles and periods from Baroque to Contemporary will be offered. The concert will highlight choral accompaniments by Guitar Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Piano Duo, featured soloists will be Esther Dickmann and Jean-Rodny Lallemand, SCF vocal representatives to the Florida College Systems Activities Association Music Symposium Student Artist Contest. Please join us for an evening of light-hearted musical selections under the direction of Melodie Dickerson and accompanied by Lurray Myers.

Jazz Bands in Concert               

March 26, 2013                       8 p.m.                         Neel Performing Arts Center

SCF Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo under the direction of Marc Mannino will feature "What is Hip" by Tower of Power; "Haven't Met You Yet" by Michael Bublé featuring SCF student vocalists Josie Fleming and Colton Cason; "Oop Bop Sh'Bam" by Dizzy Gillespie, featuring Chris Leiper on trumpet and "Just Friends" by John Klenner and Sam Lewis, featuring SCF's Jazz trombone section.

Faculty Recital, Felicia Brunelle, Violin with Guest Artists

March 29, 2013                       8 p.m.                        Neel Performing Arts Center

SCF music faculty member Dr. Felicia Brunelle, violin will perform "Inspired by Baroque" with guest artists, Mark Kroll, harpsichord and Michael McClelland, viola. Brunelle is a longstanding member of the Sarasota Orchestra and concertmaster for the Sarasota Pops Orchestra and Missouri Symphony. As an active chamber musician she currently performs throughout the United States and most recently in Eisenstadt Austria at the Esterhazy palace, one of the most beautiful Baroque palaces in Austria.

Kroll performs with the Sarasota Pops Orchsetra and has appeared as concerto soloist with some of the world's major orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Boston Symphony, the Montreal Symphony among others. He was the first American harpsichordist to appear in numerous countries, including Abu Dhabi and Dubai. McClelland is a violist with the Sarasota Orchestra and was assistant principal viola for the Florida Philharmonic.

"Rex Willis and Friends" present Original Compositions by Rex Willis     

April 2, 2013                          8 p.m.                          Neel Performing Arts Center

A concert featuring original compositions by well-known composer and classical guitarist Rex Willis. Local professional musicians and SCF students and faculty members will join Willis in the "Rex Willis and Friends" concert featuring a wide variety of musical styles. The performance includes a popular fable narrated to the animated sound of a string quartet, the premiere of a percussion ensemble work featuring a marimba, vibraphone, xylpohone and other instruments, and an experimental-avant-garde piece by a guitarist with audience participation.

"Psalm 84," a newly published choral work by Willis, will be sung by the SCF Chamber Choir, accompanied by Lurray Myers on the pipe organ. SCF Guitar Ensemble will premiere "Jarana," a piece with strong flamenco influence. Other instrumental arrangements include "Nowhere Near the Rainbow," "Fresco," "Balatta di Brno," and "Tango of Rhapsody."

Willis, SCF music instructor, teaches courses including Classical Guitar, Composition, Music Theory, Music History and Music Appreciation and he conducts the Guitar Ensemble. He has a master's degree in music composition from Florida State University. Willis has written film scenes for several award-winning independent films and has been a featured performer with several orchestras in the United States and abroad.

Faculty Recital, Marc Mannino, Jazz Guitar

April 11, 2013                        8 p.m.                          Neel Performing Arts Center

SCF music faculty member Marc Mannino, jazz guitarist will perform with guest artists John Miller, bass, George Mancini, trombone and Bob Lunergan, drums. Come and hear this fabulous ensemble as they weave their way through jazz classics and favorites.

Marc Mannino is a graduate of Florida State University College of Music with degrees in both music performance and music education. He has performed at major jazz and community festivals and has been the guitarist for many Florida productions of Broadway shows. Mannino recently served as the guitarist for Broadway star Idina Menzel at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. For the last several years, Mannino directed SCF's Jazz bands at the University of Central Florida and the University of North Texas Jazz Festivals.  

John Miller is principal bass for the Sarasota Orchestra and SCF adjunct music instructor, George Mancini is principal trombonist for the Charlotte Symphony, and Bob Lunergan is the drummer for percussionist band, Woodworks Music.

SCF Foundation presents "Evening Under the Stars"

Musical Theatre Showcase

SCF Music Theatre Ensemble will showcase songs and scenes from Broadway lexicon such as Book of Mormon, Light in The Piazza, Gypsy, Once, Wicked, Jekyll and Hyde and The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

Spring Fling Concert

April 25, 2013                        7 p.m.                          SCF Bradenton Campus, Outdoor Concert                        
 
The annual Spring Fling concert will be held outdoors on the SCF Bradenton Campus at the Performance Pavilion with performances by the Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. Come celebrate a year of musical accomplishment.
