What is the English for College program?

English for College is an intensive program for adult, beginner and high-beginner English language learners that helps them reach the level of English needed to be accepted as a student at State College of Florida (SCF). The English for College program is specifically designed for students who plan to eventually attend college at SCF.  It is an academic skills program, with homework, tests, and required attendance. This program is not designed for people who simply want to learn or improve English conversation skills.

Who can attend the English for College program?

If you seriously want to go to college and you are ready to improve your language skills to get into college, then the English for College program is for you. To enroll in this program, you need a high school diploma (from any country) and be able to bring it when you register.   If you have had this document translated, please also bring the translation.   If you have not had your diploma  translated and evaluated, you will be required to do this after you register. Don't worry; we will give you information about how to do this.

When are the classes?

The next English for College course begins on May 13, 2013. Classes meet Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at SCF Bradenton. Classes begin at SCF Venice in August. At both campuses, classes run for 12 weeks.

 How do I register?

Registration  is open now. To register for Bradenton classes, please come to the College's Division of Corporate and Community Development office, in Building 18, room 139, at SCF Bradenton.  The office is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Building 18 is located next to the parking lot, in the back of the College near the tennis courts. Please bring your high school diploma and a translation if you have it. Also, bring identification and be prepared to pay for the program at the time of registration. At this time you will also take a 1 hour test in English so we can place you in English for College level 1 or level 2. What's the difference between the English for College program and the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program?

The English for College program is not a college class. It is offered by a division of State College of Florida (the Division of Corporate and Community Development) as a service to the members of the community who want to go to college, but who don't have the necessary English skills. This is a program for beginning  and high-beginning English learners. When you finish this course, you may be at a high enough level to attend SCF's EAP program.

The EAP (English for Academic Purposes) program has courses for intermediate and advanced English language learners. This is a college program and students must be accepted by the College to take these courses. Students who take these courses may also qualify to receive financial aid.   Both the English for College program and the EAP program prepare students to complete college and/or university in the United States.

What is the content of the English for College program?

In this program, you will receive 12 hours a week of English instruction in speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar. All instruction is in a classroom with a teacher who is focused on your success. This is not a computer lab program. You will build your general English skills and your academic English skills so you can succeed in SCF college credit courses.

English for College is a challenging, academic program. You will be expected to complete about one hour of homework every night, Monday-Wednesday, and about four hours of homework from Thursday night until the following Monday class. Homework, attendance and participation are required in this program.

You will be provided with learning materials, including books and handouts. You should have access to a computer and Internet connection at home so you can do homework online. If you don't have a computer at home, your teacher will explain to you where to use a computer on campus.

In addition, you'll be given help to make a smooth transition from the English for College program to the English for Academic Purposes program at the College. You will meet with admissions staff and advisors who will help you register for SCF when you are ready, and explain what you need to do to continue your academic career. The goal of the English for College program is to move you into college courses at SCF.

How much does this program cost?

For students who say that they plan to attend college at SCF and who bring their translated and evaluated high school diploma by the end of the 5th week of class, this program costs only $250 for 144 hours instruction.  (The actual cost of the program is much more than this, but  the Foundation of the State College of Florida is generously providing scholarships to students who will be attending college when they finish the class.  So at this time, a $750 program costs only $250!)   The $250 includes tuition, books, and online learning support.  Students who are not high school graduates, or who do not wish to have their high school diplomas translated and evaluated may also attend the classes for the full tuition cost of $750.  Payment of either $250 (for qualifying students)  or $750 (for all other students) is due at the time of registration. No refunds are provided.
