English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program
Fall semester classes begin in August in Bradenton and Venice.
What is EAP?
English for Academic Purposes, or EAP, is a college program for students whose first language is not English and who want to take college-level courses. This program is for intermediate and advanced level students of English language. If you are a beginning level student, please visit the page for the English for College program.
Why should I take EAP classes? If you are a recent high school graduate, the English for Academic Purposes program will support you to make sure your writing, vocabulary, reading and test-taking skills are "college ready." For example, students who take EAP courses before taking college writing and composition (ENC 1101) have a better understanding of the expectations of college writing and will also do better in their other college courses.
If you graduated from high school some years ago, or if you already have a college
or university degree from another country, the EAP program is an important step to
improving your current employment status or getting back on the road to a professional
career, completing a new degree, or going to a university to complete an advanced
degree. Some of our EAP students are doctors and teachers in their native countries
and are improving their English skills to continue these careers in the United States.
What classes are offered?
The EAP program at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota offers courses in Reading, Grammar, Writing, and Speaking/Listening at levels 3-6, intermediate through advanced. The purpose of the program is to help students gain the English communication skills they need to be successful as they work toward a college and/or university degree.
If I'm not interested in getting a college degree, may I still take EAP classes?
Sure! Many students, some of whom already have a college degree or are in the workforce, take courses to improve their skills. However, you must be accepted to the College first in order to take EAP courses and to apply for Financial Aid.
How long will it take to complete the EAP program?
It depends at which level you start and if you are a part-time or full-time student. A full-time student takes four EAP classes, 12 credit hours, each semester. It is possible to complete one EAP level each semester. After you apply to the college, you will take a placement test that will determine the EAP level- 3, 4, 5, or 6- where you should start. Students have the chance to exit the program at level 4 and again at level 5, so it may not be necessary for a person who starts at level 3 or 4 to take all levels.
When are classes offered?
Daytime classes are offered at SCF Bradenton and SCF Venice, and evening classes are offered at SCF Bradenton. New classes start every August and January. However it is very important to apply to the college early so you have time to collect all necessary documents.
How much does it cost?
Information about SCF Tuition can be found at www.scf.edu/Tuition. Each EAP class is worth three institutional credit hours.
Is financial aid available to cover the cost of EAP courses?
Financial aid is available to qualified students, but it is important to apply early. More information on eligibility is given at www.scf.edu/FinancialAid.
How do I start?
Apply to the college as soon as possible. It is free to apply and you and you can do it online or come
to the college campus for help. It is important to start this process early, preferably
at least two months in advance, so you have time to submit all required documents,
take a placement test, and apply for financial aid.
