Access Services and Access to College Events
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota is fully committed to compliance with both the spirit and the letter of disability law. The college has been proactive in developing access and inclusion by design. The American Disability Act (ADA) Coordinator, in coordination with appropriate college officials, continually identifies and modifies any college rule, practice or procedure, which discriminates against disabled individuals. Due to the unique nature of disabilities and access strategies, specialized equipment or services are often needed by disabled individuals. The college's Access Rule explicitly recognizes this need as well as the college's affirmative obligation of ensuring "meaningful access" and providing "equally effective communication" to and with disabled individuals. The Disability Resource Center (DRC) has established a comprehensive plan for responding to all requests for the provision of accommodations (adaptive devices and/or auxiliary staff and services) to meet the individual and unique needs of disabled persons.
The college offers a wide range of programs, services and activities and has developed three separate access procedures access to an event, access to a service, and access to instruction) suitable to the unique features, parameters, and requirements of the type of service.
Access to College Events
Activities and events are typically open to the entire community and are a one-time occurrence. Examples of activities and events include graduation, sporting events (baseball, basketball, volleyball etc.), performances (plays, concerts) and Student Government Association (SGA) meetings and activities (movies, trips, lectures). Disabled individuals may need adaptive equipment and/or auxilliary staff to fully participate in a college event.
A facility may be in compliance with all accessibility guidelines, however, a disabled individual may still need a specialized piece of equipment or service to meet his or her unique needs. A computer lab for example may have an ADA-accessible computer station with a standard set of adaptive peripherals (a large monitor, adaptive keyboard and voice syntheses), however, a disabled individual may need a more robust speech program, a left handed keyboard, or an alternate pointing device. Similarly, a hearing impaired person may need an interpreter or real time translation services to fully access the activity or event.
Procedure/Requirements:
1. Be a qualified disabled individual.
2. Submit a specific Request for Event Accommodation form as it insures that all the necessary information to process the request is provided. This can be submitted to the Disability Resource Center by FAX-941-727-6381, by email to drc@scf.edu or mail.
Minimally disabled individuals making such a request need to provide the specifics of the event (identify event, date, day, time begin, time end, building, room), specify the needed accommodation (assistive listening device, interpreter etc.), their disability or functional limitation and contact information (name, address, phone, etc.).
Request for Relocation to an Accessible Facility
All new and renovated college facilities are fully accessible and compliant with American Disability Act (ADA) accessibility guidelines. However, a limited number of facilities at the college have not been renovated and their construction predates the Rehabilitation Act and the ADA and are therefore not entirely accessible. Should a disabled individual be interested in participating in an activity or event that is scheduled in an inaccessible location he/she may request that the event be relocated to an accessible facility.
Procedure/Requirements:
1. Be a qualified disabled individual
2. Submit a request to relocate the event to an accessible facility to the Disability Resource Center (DRC) at least 3 business days before the event.
